Conservation Matters: September

The latest conservation updates from our teams around the Trust.

Restoring seagrass

This month, we have been working with Project Seagrass and Natural England to restore seagrass meadows. Over the summer, we have been updating you about our seagrass work and the latest effort included planting 100 dwarf eelgrass plants in St Lawrence. We are excited to see how this restoration work progresses.

Seagrass is also a vital blue carbon habitat. A ground-breaking report has been released by The Wildlife Trusts this month, so take a look and read more about how the UK is recognising these climate-fighting, marvellous muddy places. We love them!

Butterfly records in Essex

Recently, reports from Butterfly Conservation have shown worrying declines in butterflies across the UK. For the past two years, the Trust has been asking the public to record butterfly sightings in Essex, so that we can learn more about our populations and better protect them. This year, we have received almost 9,000 records and the season for recording butterflies will end in September. We will have more information about key species and trends soon.

Even though butterfly season is almost over, you can still find out how to attract butterflies in your garden for next year. Autumn can be the best time to plant some pollinator-friendly plants.

Fir the love of wildlife

We're striving to protect 30% of land and sea by 2030, which is why increasing the amount of green space that we can protect and manage is an important part of our work. Thanks to the generous support of the public, we've secured Fir Tree Wood in Little Baddow and it's officially our new nature reserve!
