Volunteering Frequently Asked Questions
I don’t have much time to volunteer. Do you have an opportunity for me?
Yes! We have a variety of opportunities that may suit your needs. Some of our volunteers are involved just once or twice a year supporting events, or monthly in our Nature Discovery Centres or weekly on our reserves.
I don’t know anything about wildlife! Can I be involved?
You do not need to know anything about wildlife to volunteer with us! Volunteering is a great way to learn more about the wildlife in your local area and to help you understand how you can contribute to its protection. Some roles require more knowledge than others. For example, if you are a conservation volunteer you will be involved in practical wildlife and reserve management, but you will be taught everything you need to know. We welcome people from all backgrounds and hope that our staff and volunteers will be able to share some of their knowledge with you. We offer volunteers training appropriate to their role.
Can I bring my dog with me?
Unfortunately, almost all of our activities are unsuitable for bringing your dog along, many of them involve using power tools or are inside!
How old do I need to be?
Unfortunately, Essex Wildlife Trust are currently unable to support with young volunteering (aged 14-17) placements. Being able to provide young people with opportunities is extremely important to the Trust; we are reviewing the process and will share any updates on our website.
Do I need to be an Essex Wildlife Trust Member to volunteer?
No, we are grateful for whatever support you are able to give.
Will there be any vetting checks carried out?
If you are volunteering in an engagement role where you will be interacting with children and young people, the Trust will undertake vetting checks including a criminal records check (DBS check) on you (at our expense). For all volunteering roles, will ask for one form of ID.
I have a criminal record - does this mean that I can't do voluntary work?
No. A criminal record is not a barrier to volunteering with us, but it might limit the things you are able to do. If you wish to make a confidential enquiry, please contact volutneering@essexwt.org.uk. Please note, it is an offence to apply for a position volunteering with children and young people or adults at risk if barred from engaging in regulated activity.
Will I be insured?
Yes. All registered volunteers are insured.
Do you provide expenses?
Yes. We ask volunteers to discuss claiming expenses with their Volunteer Manager beforehand.
Right to Volunteer in the UK.
If you’re a UK citizen you are free to volunteer. If you’re from outside the UK or living in the UK but on a Visa, we advise you to contact the UK Borders and Immigration Agency to find out if your visa allows you to volunteer before applying.
