Volunteering on our nature reserves

Hear from one of our wonderful volunteers to tell you more about volunteering on a nature reserve.

Caroline Flagg - Volunteer Warden at Newland Grove nature reserve in Chelmsford

As the Volunteer Warden at Newland Grove nature reserve in Broomfield, near Chelmsford, I organise volunteer work parties, handle administrative tasks, ensure health and safety compliance, and, of course, bake cakes for our wonderful volunteers—an essential part of our gatherings

I also volunteer at Little Waltham Meadows and Sandylay and Moat Woods in Great Leighs and assist under the guidance of fellow wardens, learning from them and sharing in the work to preserve these valuable habitats and wild spaces. I first came to Newland Grove as part of my exercise routine, and when my husband and I retired, I wanted to contribute to maintaining the area.

Since I began volunteering with Essex Wildlife Trust, I’ve met a fantastic group of people, all with a shared passion for conserving wildlife and our natural surroundings. Our volunteer work parties are enjoyable, with a strong sense of camaraderie, and by the end of the day, there’s a great feeling of accomplishment. Being outdoors is also hugely beneficial for your physical and mental wellbeing.

If anyone is considering volunteering, I highly recommend it. Essex Wildlife Trust provides a brilliant opportunity to get outside, improve your fitness, enhance your wellbeing and enjoy a social and rewarding experience. There’s nothing to lose by giving it a go!
