James has taken on the role of Chair from Keeley Hazelhurst, who has shown incredible leadership and commitment over the past five years.
During her tenure as both Honorary Treasurer and Chair, Keeley has played a pivotal role in guiding the Trust through numerous challenges, most notably the unprecedented difficulties of the Covid-19 pandemic. Her leadership has been invaluable, and we are pleased that she will continue to support the Trust as a trustee for a few more months, ensuring a smooth transition as James steps into his new role.
James, who has been a trustee since 2020, brings 25 years of experience from the charity, wildlife, and leisure sectors, covering fundraising, marketing and communication roles and is currently the Director of Development and Corporate Partnerships at the Royal Horticultural Society.
James says, “People need nature more than ever and nature needs our help to be both restored and protected. Essex Wildlife Trust is playing a crucial role in tackling the nature and climate crises – thinking globally and acting locally. The Trust already has an amazing track record, from bringing species back from the brink of extinction to restoring vital habitats for wildlife, and it has a visionary plan to achieve even more. It is an honour and privilege to take on the role of Chair and to support the amazing team of staff, trustees, volunteers, members, and supporters to continue to put nature first.”
Rich Yates, Chief Executive of Essex Wildlife Trust, says, “James’ passion for conservation and his commitment to Essex Wildlife Trust’s mission to protect and restore nature make him an ideal leader as we continue our critical work in Essex over the next few years. We are also incredibly grateful to Keeley for her commitment and want to extend a heartfelt thank you from everyone at the Trust.”
