Over 5,000 winter birds counted at Margaret’s Hide, Fingringhoe Wick Nature Discovery Park

Over 5,000 winter birds counted at Margaret’s Hide, Fingringhoe Wick Nature Discovery Park

Each winter, thousands of coastal birds flock to Margaret’s Hide at Fingringhoe Wick Nature Discovery Park.

Between October 2024 and March 2025, dedicated volunteers joined Essex Wildlife Trust’s Conservation Team to conduct monthly wetland bird surveys, counting over 5,000 birds in total.

These surveys help us understand which species use the reserve for feeding and roosting during winter. Some birds stay, while many continue their journey across the globe. The data also helps us track population trends and see if birds are using the reserve differently over time.

Harry, our Conservation Ecologist, highly recommends Margaret’s Hide as one of the best spots to see wintering wetland birds in Essex.
