About the event
Gillian Parker has carried out extensive research into the work and legacy of the Backhouses. a Quaker family of botanists, plant breeders and nurserymen. Based in York, they were influential in the development of a number of significant gardens, including Warley Place. They also carried out pioneering research into the alpine flora of upland Britain and corresponded with Charles Darwin, amongst other notable scientists.
